It’s a good time to be a Honda owner. They’re at the forefront of the electric vehicle and hybrid wave, with the 2023 Accord drawing favorable praise in the press over the Toyota Prius. And in addition to being the world’s number one motorcycle manufacturer since 1959, they’ve become the eighth largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

Today, Avalon Honda takes a look back to see how we got here with a brief trip through Honda’s illustrious history.

The Birth of Honda

The story of Honda is one born from passion. Soichiro Honda, born in 1906, was seemingly interested in automobiles from the cradle. He spent his early life as a mechanic, tuning cars and entering them in races.

In 1937, Honda founded Tokai Seiki, which translates to the Eastern Sea Precision Machine Company. This initial venture would face innumerable challenges throughout its infancy, as the piston rings Tokai Seiki supplied to Toyota as part of a contract were rejected by the established company’s quality control process. Soichiro Honda would require a stint at engineering school and a tour of Japan’s auto factories before his mass-produced piston rings were deemed acceptable by Toyota in 1941.

Dealings and Destruction During Wartime

The start of World War II proved to be a transitory period for Soichiro Honda. Toyota demoted him from president to managing director after taking a 40% stake in Tokai Seiki, and the company was put under the control of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

During the war, Honda aided Japan by assisting other countries in automating the production of military aircraft propellers. Behind the scenes, Honda was forging pivotal relationships with personnel at Toyota, Nakajima Aircraft Company, and the Imperial Japanese Navy.

When a US B-29 bomber attack derailed Honda’s plans by destroying a Tokai Seiki plant in 1944 (an earthquake shortly thereafter would also demolish their Itwa plant), Soichiro Honda hurriedly saved face. He sold off the remains of his company to Toyota, and then funneled that money into the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946.

A Bicycle Built For You

Appropriately enough for a brand that would become synonymous with their motorcycles, the Honda Technical Research Institute also began with two wheels. Specifically, they built and sold motorized bicycles, which included attachable generator engines. Thus, the Honda A-Type was born.

In 1949, the Honda Technical Research Institute was liquidated and the Honda Motor Company was born. At the same time, Soichiro Honda met Takeo Fujiawa, who would prove to be the company’s business and marketing guru. He complimented Honda’s technical acumen so well that the two would continue working together the proceeding 24 years, until both stepped down together in 1973.

But at the start, motorcycles were the central vision. The D-Type, also named the Dream, was introduced in 1949; just 15 years later, Honda became the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles – a title they still hold today.

Restlessly, the company continued to branch out. Their first production automobile was the T360 mini pick-up truck, an eclectic vehicle that went on the market in the summer of 1963. Over the ensuing decades, Honda continued to expand both its product line and its dealing with other countries. They would even become the first Japanese company to launch their own luxury brand, the Acura, in 1986.

Drive a Honda into Tomorrow

Honda has continued to weather the trials and tribulations of the past few decades, but its storied history still has blank pages waiting to be filled with additional acclaim.

Turkey Day is nearly upon us, a time for food, family, and the endless struggle between the fourth quarter of the Cowboys game and tryptophan-induced drowsiness.

It’s a season that calls for reflection, for renewed appreciation of the things that make life worthwhile. Whether you’re on your way to the Beach Plum Farmers Market or driving the family home from Grandma’s house, the constant travel of the holidays is a reminder that we should also be thankful for reliable vehicles.

That’s in large part because today’s automobiles have much to be thankful for themselves. Thanks to a litany of modern features, driving today is safer and more comfortable than ever. Here’s a four-course meal of recent and semi-recent automotive innovations we should all give thanks to:

Collision Avoidance Technology

The invention of the airbag was a revolutionary step in automobile safety, providing a life-saving layer of protection in the event of an accident. But in today’s world, the priority has shifted to avoiding such incidents altogether. That’s where collision avoidance systems, or CAS’s, come in.

The first (extremely rudimentary) rearview backup camera was introduced way back with the 1956 Buick Centurion, and today, that feature comes standard with most new vehicles. But automobile manufacturers’ aspirations have evolved to incorporate comprehensive driver assist systems. These systems not only alert drivers to nearby vehicles but can also assume total autonomy of the vehicle’s functions when a potential collision is detected. With CAS, it’s like you always have a co–pilot with you, and every day its presence saves lives.

Mobile App Interconnectivity

The world is more connected than ever, and your car is now a key part of that eternal web. Though Bluetooth connectivity and similar means of interfacing your phone to your vehicle have been around for over a decade, we’re currently seeing a surge in connected mobile apps.

For many automakers, it’s become an elevated priority for their vehicles to connect with as many compatible apps as possible, making the transition from your home or office to your new Honda CR-V feel seamless. Assuming this trend persists, an updated version of this blog a decade from now may be more focused on what your vehicle can’t do.

LED Headlights

Since arriving on the scene in 2004, LED (short for “Light-Emitting Diode”) headlights have become the preferred choice of many manufacturers – specifically luxury brands. LED lights offer plenty of advantages over more traditional halogen and tungsten lights, including longer lifespans, increased visibility, and less electricity use. As a result, the cost of headlight maintenance significantly lowers thanks to LED.

We may not have the capability to fully replicate daylight driving during our evening commutes just yet, but LED is illuminating the way forward regardless.

EcoBoost Engines

Every technological upgrade in the world is for nought if we don’t have a world to begin with. Ford’s EcoBoost engine, a turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engine, was primarily designed as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional engines. The goal was to deliver comparable power and torque while significantly enhancing fuel efficiency. Thanks to this eco-conscious approach, EcoBoost engines are able to achieve 20% improved fuel economy while emitting 15% less greenhouse emissions.

As we peer deeper into our automotive future, electric vehicles and green-first options seem destined to become more ubiquitous. Less costly and more versatile than purely gas or diesel engines, EcoBoost engines should only continue to grow in popularity.

The Rest is Gravy

We have plenty to be thankful for here at Avalon Honda: our beautiful Cape May location, its vibrant community, and most of all, our loyal customers. Spooky season is upon us, bringing cooler weather and the unfortunate reminder that your vehicle is susceptible to all sorts of Fall trickery.  Dead batteries, obstructed windshields, deflated tires… these are just some of the horrors waiting to jump out at us by the time Halloween rolls around.

Fortunately, we’ve got five easy tricks of our own that, together, add up to an inexpensive treat for your vehicle.

Make Washing Your Vehicle into a Routine Activity

It may seem pointless to wash your car after, say, a week’s worth of rain showers. But regularly cleaning your car provides more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Beyond damaging your car’s paint, dirt, grime, and other foreign substances can corrode the undercarriage. A constant cleaning schedule helps keep such unwanted materials from slipping through the cracks.

Cosmetic maintenance shouldn’t be limited to the car’s exterior. Get under your hood and check your battery for any signs of corrosion. Inside the car, protect your floor mats with a protector spray or clear vinyl mat, as the buildup of too much muck could wear them out quickly. Vacuum your mats whenever possible, and if the situation gets too dire, give them a thorough wash with soapy water. Your passengers shouldn’t be afraid when they step into your car – leave that to the horror movies.

Travel Lightly

Whenever they’re not necessary for your trip, consider reducing the number of items you keep in your vehicle’s storage space. When you transport large, heavy items, you run the risk of reducing your gas mileage, and are putting an excess strain on your tire pressure.

Be sure to always keep essentials on hand, including a first-aid kit, antifreeze, jumper cables, and a spare tire. But consider that the trunk of your car may not be the ideal storage space for your air conditioner all winter.

Keep Hydrated

Humans know the importance of constant hydration – even when our bladders are rebelling against the doctor-recommended eight glasses of water a day. Just as the human body needs fluids to sustain itself, your vehicle should never be left thirsty.

Engine oil, power steering fluid, and coolant should all be checked and topped off once a month. It is also a good idea to check brake and transmission fluids at least twice a year. And make sure to keep your windshield washer fluid well supplied, especially if you’re embarking on a long trip or if the weather appears cumbersome. After all…

Change Your Wiper Blades

…pristine visibility should be front and foremost on the list of any automobile owner’s list of priorities. Low-maintenance summer days make us forget how abysmal your windshield’s condition can quickly become once winter weather settles in. The mixture of a sudden snow squall and ineffective wiper blades could be the deadly combination you didn’t realize you were unprepared for.

As the weather starts to get cooler, your wiper blades could start gradually corroding – even if they are still performing well. Check the rubber strips on the blades and give them the occasional wiping. Remove branches, leaves, and other autumnal debris. In general, you should replace your wiper blades every six to twelve months – so why not make Halloween your annual reminder to do so?

Schedule Your Car for Maintenance Sooner Than Later

Much like checking every corner of a haunted house, there’s no such thing as being too safe when it comes to the health of your vehicle. Maintaining a regular service schedule is a must, but when your vehicle starts showing any signs of mischief this Halloween, don’t hesitate to make an impromptu appointment with our Service Department

From tires to windshield repair, Avalon Honda is here for all your Fall service needs. And for a treat of your own, stop by our recently renovated showroom today to explore our full inventory of new or used vehicles.

As electric vehicles become increasingly prevalent in our country, Honda has taken steps to ensure it remains at the forefront of the electric revolution. After finalizing deals with some of the nation’s top charging networks over the past few weeks, Honda has further cemented its position as a leader in the electric vehicle space.

Charging Network Expansion

Thanks to agreements with EVgo and Electrify America, Honda drivers will have expanded access to two of North America’s largest charging networks. This is in addition to the high-powered charging network that Honda recently announced they are creating alongside six other prominent automakers. The multiple ventures ensure Honda drivers they will not lack charging options in the years and decades to come.

The Smartphone Connection

As part of the new arrangement with EVgo and Electrify America, Honda owners will have access to a smartphone app capable of locating available fast charging stations across the continent. The app will also give owners the option to pay for charging, enroll in subscription plans and more, all without having to leave the car.

The Shogo Initiative Grows

Honda isn’t limiting their dedication to electric energy to consumer vehicles. The new charging network agreements come after the announcement that Honda is expanding its Shogo initiative, another electric-based endeavor. Also called “Project Courage,” the Shogo initiative sees Honda delivering miniature electric vehicles to children’s hospitals nationwide, allowing young patients to traverse the facilities in a fun and safe manner.

Beyond Electric

Honda’s recent commitment to technological advances also stretches beyond the electric landscape. Select 2023 and 2024 Honda models now have access to the Chamberlain Group’s myQ Connected Garage feature, enabling drivers to open, close, and monitor their garage doors through their in-dash display screen. The cloud-based technology requires no new vehicle hardware, allowing the driver to explore the app with no external commitment.

The future is here, and it dreams electric. There has never been a better time to stop by Avalon Honda and explore our broad selection of new and pre-owned hybrid vehicles. From EV charging to battery replacement, Avalon Honda is your one-stop shop for all your Honda hybrid needs.

As drivers, we all have our beliefs and habits on the road that we take for granted. Many of these come from the driving lessons we learned from parents, friends, or driving school instructors. However, not all of these beliefs are necessarily true, or the best practice on the road.

In this blog, we will debunk five of the most common driving myths in America and provide you with the facts. By the end of this post, we hope you will have a better understanding of safe driving practices and improve your overall driving experience.

Myth #1: It’s safer to drive with your hands at the 10 and 2 o’clock positions.

Many of us learned the traditional way of holding the steering wheel at 10 and 2 o’clock. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends holding the wheel at 9 and 3 o’clock for better control, especially in case of sudden turns or steering movements.

The 9 and 3 o’clock positions allow for a better grip of the wheel, making it easier to turn it in any direction if necessary. Additionally, this position provides the driver with increased space between their arms and chest in case of an accident, which can help reduce serious injuries.

Myth #2: It’s safer to drive slower than the speed limit.

While it’s important to obey speed limits, driving too slowly can also be dangerous. It can lead to impatient drivers behind you, causing them to make reckless maneuvers and potentially cause accidents. In some cases, driving too slowly can be a violation of the law, so make sure to maintain a speed that is reasonable and safe.

Myth #3: Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive makes you invincible on the road.

While 4WD or AWD can provide better traction in certain driving conditions (such as on snow or ice), it can also provide a false sense of security to the driver. It does not make you invincible on the road and does not improve braking or steering ability. Always drive according to the road conditions and adjust your speed when necessary.

Myth #4: Red cars are more likely to get pulled over by police.

This is one of the most widespread urban legends in the driving community, but there is no evidence to back it up. The color of your car does not impact your chances of getting pulled over. Police officers look for safety violations, such as speeding, running red lights, or failing to use turn signals, regardless of the color of your car.

Myth #5: Using your phone with your hands-free device is safe while driving.

While using a hands-free device to make calls or send texts is legal in many states, it is not always safe. Even if your hands are on the wheel, your attention is still divided between driving and the conversation.

Research shows that any form of phone use while driving can be distracting and increase the risk of accidents. Whenever possible, avoid using your phone while driving or pull over to a safe place if you need to make a call.

Driving Debunked

Driving myths can create confusion and impact safe driving habits. By debunking these five common driving myths, we hope to help drivers understand the importance of adopting safe driving practices, following traffic laws, and staying focused while on the road.

Remember to always drive defensively, be aware of your surroundings, and be mindful of potential hazards. Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility.

If your car battery has died, you’re not alone. It’s a common issue that can happen to anyone. Luckily, jump-starting a car is a simple process that can save you from having to call a tow truck or mechanic. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the steps to jump-start your car safely and easily.

Step 1: Check Your Battery

Before you begin, inspect your battery to ensure it is properly attached and free of corrosion or leaks. These issues can cause the battery to fail, so be sure to address them before attempting to jump-start your car.

Step 2: Gather Tools

You’ll need a few items to jump-start your car, including a set of jumper cables and a working car with a charged battery. Jumper cables are typically black and red with clamps on both ends and can be found at your local auto parts store or here at Avalon Honda. Park the working car close enough to your vehicle so that you can safely attach the jumper cables to both batteries with ease.

Step 3: Attach Cables

Start by ensuring both cars are turned off before attaching the jumper cables. Locate the positive and negative battery terminals on each car, terminals are usually color-coded and labeled with a plus (+) or minus (-) sign.

Attach one end of the positive (+) cable (usually red) to the dead battery’s positive terminal. Do the same for the support car’s positive terminal. Take one end of the negative (-) cable (usually black) and attach it to the good battery’s negative terminal. Finally, attach the other end of the negative cable to the dead car’s negative battery terminal or an unpainted piece of metal on the car.

Step 4: Start the Working Car and Wait

With both vehicles properly connected, start up the working car and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes. As it runs, the charging system will begin to charge the dead battery on your vehicle.

Step 5: Try Starting Your Car

After fifteen to twenty minutes, attempt to start your own car. If it starts up, congratulations – you’ve successfully jump-started your vehicle! Next, disconnect the cables in the opposite order you connected them, taking care not to touch the metal parts of the cables together as you remove them. Remove the negative (-) cable from your car’s battery, then the negative cable from the support car’s battery. Do the same for the positive (+) cable on each vehicle.

Once you disconnect the jumper cables, you’re done! Wasn’t that easy?

Step 6: If Your Car Doesn’t Start

If your car still won’t start, try repeating the process. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to get a new battery or have your car inspected by a mechanic here at Avalon Honda

Final Thoughts

Jumpstarting your car is easy and a practical skill that every driver should know — but prevention is always better than cure. Ensure that you turn off all lights and electronics in your car when the engine is not running. This will help prevent your battery from draining. Regularly maintaining your battery by cleaning it and checking for leaks or corrosion will also help prolong its lifespan.

With the right tools and knowledge, knowing how to jump start a vehicle can put you back on the road quickly and avoid a costly tow truck call. Remember to always handle jumper cables with caution, as they contain electricity that can be dangerous if not used correctly. Follow these steps, and you’ll be more than ready to jump-start your car the next time your battery dies on you.

Driving is an exciting milestone in life, but it can also be intimidating, especially for new drivers. Navigating the roads as a beginner involves a lot of responsibility, but with proper guidance, it can be a lot easier and more secure. In this blog, we will focus on five tips that can help new drivers stay safe and confident on the road.

Tip 1: Master the Basics

Before hitting the road, it is essential to understand the fundamental rules of driving. Start by reviewing your state’s driver’s manual or take an approved driver’s education course. This will help you learn the rules of the road and gain a better understanding of road signs, speed limits, and traffic laws. Knowing the basics ensures that you can navigate the roads with confidence and safety.

To further master the basics and gain a strong foundation in driving, it is important to practice frequently in various conditions. Make sure to drive in different weather conditions, such as rain or snow, and during different times of day. Additionally, practice on roads with varying speed limits and traffic levels. This will help you become comfortable behind the wheel and

Tip 2: Keep Your Car Maintained

Regular car maintenance is crucial for a vehicle’s safe operation. Keeping up with oil changes, brakes, and tire rotations are necessary for ensuring that the car is in proper working order. Having a reliable vehicle also means reducing the chance of costly and dangerous breakdowns.

Having a reliable car is also essential for avoiding any unwanted incidents on the road. Be sure to check your fluids (oil, coolant, brake, and transmission) regularly and top them off if needed. Make sure to have your brakes inspected occasionally, as well as inspect the car’s tires for proper inflation levels and tread wear. If your

Tip 3: Avoid Distractions

Distractions while driving are dangerous, irresponsible, and can lead to accidents. Keep your phone on silent and out of reach while driving. If you need to use your phone, pull over to a safe spot to take the call or reply to a text message. Additionally, avoid eating, smoking, grooming, or engaging in other distracting activities while behind the wheel.

In order to reduce distractions while driving, it is important to minimize the number of passengers in the car. Having fewer passengers in the vehicle reduces the chances of conversations or other interactions that could take your focus away from driving. Additionally, avoid programming GPS devices or changing radio stations while driving, as these activities require visual and mental attention. Lastly, be

Tip 4: Don’t Tailgate

Maintaining a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front is crucial for a driver’s safety. The recommended following distance is three to four seconds between cars. This ample time will allow you to avoid a collision if the vehicle in front makes any sudden stops or turns.

Tailgating can be dangerous and should always be avoided. Not only can it lead to rear-end collisions, but it can also cause road rage from the driver in front. Additionally, tailgating restricts vision and forces drivers to make quick decisions in order to avoid a collision. To ensure safety, keep your following distance at three

Tip 5: Obey All Traffic Rules

Driving safely and responsibly involves obeying all traffic rules and laws, including stop signs, traffic signals, and posted speed limits. Remember, breaking the rules puts not only your safety but also the safety of other road users at risk.

When driving, always be aware of the speed limit and the posted signs to ensure that you stay within the laws. Following the speed limit helps prevent speeding tickets and keeps you from putting yourself and other drivers at risk. Additionally, be mindful of intersections and obey any traffic signals, such as stop lights or yield signs. These traffic signals are there to keep you and other drivers safe on the road.

Get Out and Drive — Safely!

In conclusion, as a new driver, it is crucial to remain vigilant, patient, and adhere to basic traffic rules. Regular maintenance of your car, avoiding distractions, and maintaining a safe following distance are all essential practices to help ensure safe driving. Remember to never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, always wear your seatbelt, and enjoy the ride. Following these five tips will make you a more confident and responsible driver.

Spring background, landscape with flowers, grass, butterflies and blue sky. vector illustration.

With spring right around the corner now is the best time to start prepping your car for warmer weather. Whether you’re washing off a winter’s worth of salt and dirt or you’re finally bringing the summer car out of your garage, some spring cleaning is a great way to increase the life of your vehicle.

If you’re a DIY’er looking to get their ride ready for spring, this is one list of tips and tricks you won’t want to miss.

Wash it Down

Spring is the perfect time to give your car the much-needed love it deserves. To start, grab some soap, water and a lint-free chamois cloth. Once you have your supplies, start scrubbing away any winter grime, dust or debris. Don’t forget to get into all of those nooks, crannies and hard-to-reach areas.

Now that you’re done with the soap and water stage, give the car a quick once-over before wiping it down with your chamois cloth. Using a lint-free chamois cloth instead of air drying helps avoid any unwanted water spots on your vehicle.

If you don’t have much time or are looking for an easier method, an automatic car wash is a good option to consider. With just a few minutes of your time an automatic car wash will have your car ready for Spring in no time.

Check Your Tires

As spring approaches, it’s time to start checking the air pressure and tread depth of your tires. Having tires with solid tread depth and the proper air pressure not only keeps you safe, but it also ensures peak performance and fuel economy.

Tire air pressure can drop with temperature changes or from sitting for a long time. So, the first step is to ensure those air levels are set to your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. You typically can find this information on the inside of your driver’s side door jam.

Next, you’ll want to check your tread depth. While there are a few methods of checking this at home, we always recommend having one of our certified technicians do this for you. This ensures that the tread depth reading is accurate so don’t have to buy tires before they’re ready to be replaced.

Inspect the Battery

Spring is an important time to inspect the battery of your car to ensure it is fully operational. A battery that has sat for a long time or been exposed to cold weather for long periods of time may not be as strong as it once was. That’s why we recommend testing your battery or having it tested as you begin to prepare your vehicle for spring.

It’s also wise to have a technician check your alternator and charging system annually. This will ensure that your battery is being properly charged which maximizes its lifespan. If your charging system or alternator aren’t functioning properly, it’s better to find that out ahead of time before you end up stranded.

Making sure your battery is ready for spring will go a long way in helping you stay safe and worry-free on the roads this season. You can have your alternator, battery and charging system checked by one of our certified technicians here at Avalon Honda. All you have to do is schedule an appointment online or call us today!

Change the Oil

One of the oldest pieces of car maintenance advice to ever exist, changing your oil is essential no matter what season it is. However, after a long winter or a prolonged period of garage storage, it is even more important to check and/or change the oil in your vehicle. This can help catch issues such as degraded oil or finding metal shavings in the oil pan.

If you don’t have the time or space to check your oil, don’t worry, our service center is full of certified technicians who can help. At Avalon Honda, we can check and replace your oil and filter, as well as perform a variety of other maintenance and repair services. All you have to do is call for an appointment or schedule your service online today!

Protect Your Paint

Preparing your car for the spring season is an important part of vehicle maintenance, and paint protection should be a top priority. Investing in paint protection film or a ceramic coating can help protect against scratches, dirt and other things that can cause paint damage over time.

Paint protection film acts as a physical barrier to any debris coming in contact with your paint, while ceramic coatings act as an extra layer on top of your paint that wears better against damage. Both are excellent options for protecting your car’s paint from the elements and road debris.

Ready for Spring

With the days getting longer and temperatures increasing, it’s time to put winter in the rearview mirror and prepare for spring. Make sure your car is ready for sunny drives and weekend trips by following our five favorite tips for prepping your vehicle for spring.

And remember, if you don’t have time to do this yourself, we have a team of professionals waiting to help you. Schedule your appointment online or simply stop by our location in Cape May Court House today!
