Not sure what your Honda needs? When service is due, the Maintenance Minder on your dash shows a code such as A1 or B2. Call us with the code and we will tell you what it covers.
What Shore Driving Does to Your Car
Cars that live on a barrier island deal with things most inland cars never see. When your Honda comes in, these are the shore-related items worth asking us to look at.
Salt air and rust underneath
Salt spray settles on everything near the beach, including the parts you never see: brake lines, exhaust, suspension hardware and the underbody. Winter road brine on the Parkway adds another layer. Rinsing the underside of your car regularly helps a lot, and during any visit we can look over the underbody and brakes for corrosion before it turns into a repair.
Brakes on cars that sit
Humid, salty air puts a coat of rust on brake rotors quickly. A light orange film usually wears off after a few stops, but a car that sits for weeks at a time can develop deeper rust, uneven pad wear or a sticking caliper. If you hear grinding, feel a pulsing pedal or the car pulls to one side, have the brakes checked.
Sand in filters, wipers and glass
Beach sand and summer dust clog engine and cabin air filters faster than normal driving, which can mean weaker AC airflow and a musty smell inside. Sand also wears out wiper blades and can pit or chip the windshield. Small chips can often be fixed before they spread through our windshield repair service.
Summer heat, AC and stop-and-go traffic
July traffic on Rio Grande Avenue and the Parkway means a lot of idling in the heat, which works your cooling system, battery and AC hard. The AC condenser sits right behind the front grille, where salt air can corrode it over time. If your AC is blowing warm or takes a long time to cool down, bring it in before the hottest weeks of the year.
Flooded streets
Parts of the Wildwoods see standing water during storms and very high tides. Saltwater is much harder on brakes, wheel bearings and wiring than rainwater, so it is best to wait it out or find another route. If you did drive through it, rinse the underside of the car soon and have it inspected. If water reached the floor of the car, call us before driving it further.
Cloudy headlights
Sun and salt both break down the clear coating on headlight lenses, which leaves them yellow and hazy and cuts how far you can see at night. Our service team offers headlight restoration to clear them up, so ask about it during your next visit.

Before summer
- Test the battery, especially if the car sat over the winter
- Check tire pressure and tread
- Make sure the AC blows cold

After the season

If your car sits at a shore house

Honda Service near Wildwood: FAQ
How far is Avalon Honda from Wildwood, NJ?
Avalon Honda is at 100 Avalon Blvd. in Cape May Court House, about 13 miles and 15 minutes from Wildwood. Take Route 47 to the Garden State Parkway north, then Exit 13 to Avalon Boulevard. Summer traffic can add time.
Does living near the ocean mean my Honda needs more maintenance?
Your Maintenance Minder still sets when oil changes and other scheduled service are due. Living at the shore adds a few things to watch between visits: rust on the underbody and brakes, air filters that clog faster from sand, and AC parts that are exposed to salt air. Ask us to check those items when your car is in for service.
How often should I rinse the underside of my car at the shore?
A good habit is to rinse the underbody every couple of weeks during beach season, and after any drive through flooded streets or roads treated with winter brine. Many car washes offer an underbody rinse.
My car sits at our shore house for months. What should I do before summer?
Have the battery tested, check the tire pressure, look for sand or critter damage, and make sure the brakes and AC work before the first long drive. Our service team can handle all of it in one visit.
Do you service cars other than Honda?
Yes. Avalon Honda services all makes and models, so the whole household can use the same service department.
What should I do if I drove through a flooded street?
Rinse the underside of the car as soon as you can and schedule an inspection, since saltwater is hard on brakes, wheel bearings and wiring. If water reached the floor of the car, call us before driving it further.
